Ladies, What Are We Doing?

I had a really interesting conversation the other day and it made me stop and ask myself, "Ladies, what are we doing!?" A man at my gym and I were talking and I mentioned how I had forgotten to eat for 8 hours on a Saturday. He lightheartedly laughed and said only ladies forget to eat. Men never forget. He wasn't being mean. I definitely wasn't offended by what he said, but it did make me stop and think. Normally, I don't forget to eat. I suffer from low blood sugar. I've gone to the doctor many, many times to get my sugars tested because, often, suddenly I can barely keep my head up or I'm trembling so hard I can't even hold a pen steady. Doctors have simply said to eat every 2 hours and carry a snack at all times. That's cute and all when you are in...

Sins, Spirituality, and Confession

Today I spoke to a couple of different friends about being bad Catholics, going to confession, and the importance of staying close to God. (Sorry to those who have different beliefs, feel free to close out of this post if it's not for you.) One friend said she scheduled a confession time recently. Our church is providing them at set times during Lent if you wish to go then, but you are also able to schedule a time (this also applies year-round). She said she needed to schedule because she feared she would need more time. We both laughed. She shared how moving it was and how much closer she felt to God having gone to confession for the first time in a couple of decades. What many non-Catholics may not realize is - that's entirely the point. A priest I'm quite close with told me many years ago a...

Helping Our Teachers, Helping Our Kids, and Helping Ourselves

I am not a person who will sit by when I see something wrong. As I shared in a previous post, I jump into action. However, I'm also not a person who likes to complain when I don't have a solution to offer. I cannot stand those people who scream from the rooftops how much they can't stand something but then refuse to do anything to make it better. Those people are some of the worst. Lord help me, I'm doing everything in my power to be a change agent and be part of the solution. I was part of my children's PTO and was the PTO president for two years. I'm an active volunteer within the school system and my children's teachers know they can rely on me to help with a project, a field trip, or even on an occasion when an item is forgotten - I will...

The People We Love To Hate

Why is it judgment comes so dang easy? I mean, really. We just seem to judge so reflexively, I think most people don't even realize they are doing it. I know I'm guilty of it. Last night, my online book club got into a discussion about Prince Harry (former Prince? the man formerly known as the symbol of the fake royal game they all play in England and we all choose to participate in? SEE I JUST DID IT AGAIN! Judgey!) ... about Harry's new book "Spare." We were discussing whether or not we planned to read his book and why. I shared I had no interest in reading, I watched the Oprah special and I couldn't bring myself to watch their Netflix special. In my opinion, the Netflix special is the antithesis of everything they said they didn't want: privacy and to be out of the public light. If...

About Heather

(So, my web designer says I needed to include a bio, though I find this task silly because, if you’re here, you know me.)

I’m a writer. It’s what I do. It’s a cathartic mechanism when I need release from my anxiety. I’ve had blogs in the past; I’ve taken them down, but I never stopped writing. I simply can’t. My notes app is forever long as it’s filled with pages and pages of different topics. Sometimes I just write a few sentences. Sometimes I write paragraphs.

Recently, I've been writing long essays. My friends and others I hold dear have coaxed me into sharing my work again.

So that's what I'm doing, you wicked, pushy people. LOL

I have no desire to see my writing be anything more than an opportunity to share what I love doing most. I have no interest in this blog reaching the masses.

I thought it would be fun to call it My Spicy Disaster because that's often how I feel. A complete mess of epic proportion. So join me, if you'd like, and let's pretend we're not sitting amongst the chaos crying, but laughing instead.

Or maybe we do cry sometimes, but then wipe our tears and remember one person’s disaster is another person’s … well, who the hell knows …
